With obvious parallels to apartheid in South Africa and slavery in America, these books make it clear that much of the bounty of opportunity, wealth and choice that I and my ancestors have benefited from in Canada is tied directly and indirectly to the policies of cultural genocide and racism that substantially destroyed Canada's aboriginal nations. These are two books that, in my view, Canadian high school students, politicians, journalists, educators and newcomers - OK lets just say EVERYONE - must read to understand where our wonderful country has 'come from' and those that have paid the price along the way. Since then I've had the opportunity to read Thomas King's brilliant The Inconvenient Indian: A Curious Account of Native People in North America and Alexandra Shimo's forceful and personal Invisible North. In my March 2016 post about the ongoing flooding, health and social crisis on the Kashechewan Reserve in northern Ontario I noted a "new hope in Canada for doing more to address the third world living conditions of some of our fellow citizens".
